Development Flashcards
What are the 5 indicators of development?
1.access to clean water
2. phones per hundred people
3. access to the internet
4. levels of energy consumption
5. percentage of the population in agricultural work
What three things does the HDI measure?
education
health
living standards
How are the three things in the HDI measured?
To measure health, the HDI uses life expectancy at birth.
To measure education, the HDI uses average years spent in school.
To measure living standards, the HDI uses real GNI per capita.
HDI low development range?
0-0.49
HDI medium development range?
0.50-0.69
HDI high development range?
0.70-0.79
HDI very high development range?
0.80-1.00
Advantages of HDI?
holistic - looks at whole of development (reliable), rather than one indicator
good for comparison
Disadvantages of HDI?
omits other indicators
ignores distribution of development (gini coefficient)
Difference between HDI and IHDI?
IHDI accounts for different levels of inequality
What will happen to the IHDI if there is lots of inequality?
will be far lower than the HDI
Difference between MPI and HDI/IHDI?
looks at more indicators e.g access to electricity
What does MPI calculate?
number of people in poverty
average intensity of poverty
High MPI values =
high levels of poverty - low levels of development
