Development Flashcards
What is the brain stem
The part of the brain that connects to the spinal cord
What is the function of the brain stem
Motor and sensory functions- carries motor+ sensory nerves to brain and the rest of the body and from the brain to the rest of the body
Automatic functions- controls basic life functions
How developed is the brain stem at birth
Highly developed as it’s important in directing atomic behaviours like breathing so it needs to be well developed at birth
What is another name for the cerebellum
Little brain
Where is the cerebellum located
It is located near the top of the spinal cord
What is the function of the cerebellum
Finish later
What is one of the last parts of the brain to reach maturity
Cerebellum
Where is the thalamus located
Deep inside the brain
What is the function of the thalamus
It receives and send on signals
Receives sensory signals and sends these onto the area of the brain coordinated with this sense
It also co-ordinates motor signals, sending information from the motor area of the body
What does the thalamus act as a hub off
Information
How thick is the cortex
3mm
What mainly takes place in the frontal cortex
Thinking
Where in the cortex does sensory processing take place
Various places such as visual area and auditory area
Where in the cortex is motor processing controlled
The motor area- this directs movement
How developed is the cortex at birth
Still fairly primitive- develops through life
