Q

how is the experiment done

A
  • time measured on stop clock to 1/100th of a second
  • the swtich is open and the electromagnet is activated, holding the ball in place
  • when the switch is thrown, the electromagnet circuit is broken, releasing the ball, and simultaneously the clock circuit is activated, starting the clock
  • the clock is stopped when the ball hits the trap door and breaks the circuit
  • repeated three times, over a wide range of heights as possibke

Q

precautions

A
  • although low volatages are being used, care should be taken with wiring to prevent any short circuits
  • a suitable container should be placed under the trapdoor to catch the baller bearing and prevent it falling on the floor, creating a trip hazard
