How is a skin scraping preformed?
First step is to gently scrape the surface of the skin with a scalpel blade. When performed properly there will be a small irritated area on the the skin.
What things do scraping the skin yield?
Skin, hair, dander, and sometimes mites if they are present.
What does it signify when there is an irritated area on the skin?
That the scraping was done thorough enough to find mites that may have burrowed deep.
What is done with the scraped material?
It is put on a slide for viewing under the microscope. The slide is then methodically analyzed for mites, mite eggs, or evidence of a fungal infection.
Does anything need to be done to the area of skin irritated by the scraping?
No, it is only minor irritation and will resolve in a short time and does not need any medication.
How long does a skin scraping take?
It takes only five minutes and results are immediately given to client.
What types of fungal cultures do we do?
Dermatophyte Test Medium (DTM)
What is medical mycology?
The study of fungi in medicine.
What is specific gravity? What is the normal range?
It is a test that detects ion concentration of the urine. Small amounts of protein or ketoacidosis tend to elevate results.
Normal range is 1.010-1.030
What is the normal pH level in a U/A?
4.8-7.5
