What do you to on the day to day?
I was assigned to test IT operations to test backup and recovery and I noted that our company uses NetBackup tool to back up the application files, and Microsoft SQL Studio tool to backup the production databases (note: it is not important to back up operating system as they could easily be downloaded from the vendors website if necessary). Our backup period is on a schedule of daily incremental and weekly full. Weekly full backups are stored off-site by Iron Mountain. I noted from detailed testing that the database of the application was not being performed by the SQL Studio tool because the software stopped working for about a month before our audit and the IT group didn’t notice that they were no longer receiving email notifications from the tool of backup successful completion (note: the tape sent to Iron Mountain was empty for database but had application files which are not useful without the supporting data from the database). The IT group noticed the gap when I asked for the backup completion log and email notification and had none to provide me; they immediately restored the tool and database backup, and were grateful I caught it. I also noticed from that although they were backing up the files, they were not performing periodic necessary. I asked them to at least perform backup recovery exercise once a year and keep ticket or other evidence of this backup recovery.
