What is document grid?
It is used when you design a chart but not for when you have established your own grid on a base line
What is one thing we want our layout grid to have?
- Give us flexiblity of being able to size our images to different scales
- Maintain their aspect ratio
- Not have to do much cropping of those images
- Easily accomediate a 1-1 or 3-4
Why is baseline an incremented ruler?
- We’ve used this number of 12
- Everything about our paragraph needs to be based on 12 for those paragrahs that we want to be locked to baseline grid
- Meaning leading value plus any space before, plus any space after needs to equal 12. Or multiple of 12.
What are some things you have to consider when you work with overlapping text or picture frames?
The amount of offset should equal baseline grid increment
You will need to ignore text-wrap
What is going to ensure that the copy you copy will cut pasted onto layers it came from?
Paste remembers layers

- Trade Paperback is 2:3 as it is 6” x 9”
- Magazine, iPad is 3:4 as it is 8 1/4” x 11”
- A4 is 5:7
How can you use common aspect ratios when you develop your layout?
You break the page down into common ratios of elements on page
For ex:
- 4:6 (medium size vertical image)
- 3:2 (smallest horizontal image)
- 2:3 (smallest vertical image)
- 6:4 (largest horizontal)
How do you set up your baseline grid?

- Grids / Document Grid: Light Gray

- Increment Every: 12 points
- Select Grids in Back

The text doesn’t have an orphan or widow

What are some things to remember when you work with text wraps and grids?
- It can wrap both ‘right and left’ sides
- You can chose to ‘ignore text wraps’
- You can apply text frame general options to the wrap
What type of layers works well with grids?
Active corner, grid field, gutters, columns, row, type area, layout grid, text and pictures
How do you combine object styles with grids?
Frame fitting options / Fill Frame Proportionally

How can you use the grid in a powerful way?
- After you constructed 6-column grid, with rules
- Draw out 3 boxes, locked to 6-column grid
- Hold LMB+cmd + LEFT or RIGHT arrow
- Duplicate selection: shift + option + click + drag
- Fit frame proportionally
- Use paragraph styles
- Keep options / start paragraph in next frame
- Indents and spacing / last line indent
- Text frame baseline / use custom baseline grid
