Design Theory and Application Flashcards
What are the 3 i’s for a design cycle.
Identify, Invent, Implement
What are the 5 steps in the IDENTIFY phase?
Define/Identify need, Empathize, identify stakeholders, identify requirements (functions, objectives & constraints)
What are the 3 steps in the INVENT phase?
Concept generation (Ideation), Concept testing (Minimum viable product), Concept selection (1 or two good ideas)
What are the 2 steps in the IMPLEMENT phase?
Implementation strategy development, Implementation strategy execution.
When is the cycle done?
Never!!!!
What are the 3 requirements of a need statement?
The problem (need), The Population (who it applies to), Outcome (measure of success)
what is the standard format of a need statement?
“A way to address (Problem) in (Population) that (Outcome)”
once you have your initial statement what should you ask yourself to check you have hit all the right points?
Problem (could the problem be narrowed/ broadened?), Population (relevant to more/less success?), Outcome (is there a more essential outcome?)
Need statements must be independent of what?
A solution you dummy!
What are the 3 parts to a FOC analysis?
Functions, Objectives and Constraints!
what do you consider with Functions?
what the technology must do in order to work, what technology must fulfill to be considered a possible viable solution.
what do you consider with Objectives?
these are what design solutions should be, they’re used to judge how well the idea solves the design problem, choose between viable solutions (maximize or minimize)
What is considered for Constraints?
What the technology MUST be, limits are set for design space, any potential solutions that violate a constraint are thrown out.
what are some constraint areas?
Technical, Economical, Social, Political, Environmental
What must you do with all Functions, Objectives and Constraints?
Quantify them!
