Design Process Flashcards
What are the key stages of the design process?
Brief, Research, Specification, Idea Generation, Development, Plan for Manufacture and Evaluation.
Why is a specification important in the design process?
It provides clear design requirements, ensures the product meets user needs and helps evaluate success.

SPECIFICATION?
A specification highlights the necessary information that has to be included in the design. It is a detailed list of things that the design must have,
do or be. It should be used throughout the design process to give guidance and as a basis to evaluate the design.
What does function mean in relation to the product?
Function is the main thing that the product is designed to do.
Which aspects of performance might affect the durability of a product?
The materials it is made from, how it is manufactured, how it is used and how well it is maintained.
Give examples of how a product could be made easier to use?
Add symbols to indicate the function of different parts, don’t have too many parts to the product and make power sources (batteries etc)
When comparing the aesthetics of a product, what should be considered?
Aesthetics is about the look or appearance of the product.
Style, Colour (contrast/harmonising), Shape, Texture.
Explain what is meant by the terms Physiology, Pyschology and Anthropometrics.
Physiology - how the user physically interacts with the product (push/pull/lift/press)
Psychology - how the user feels/helps to understand how a product works
Anthropometrics - data to do with the human body (arm length/height/ eye sight 5-95th percentile)
Suggest benefits of launching a product under a brand name?
Consumer loyalty – people are more likely to buy from a brand that they have had a good experience with before.
The company can charge a higher price for their product.
People are more likely to buy products from a brand name.
There is a perception that branded products are better quality.
There is already a market for products sold under a brand from people who have bought their products before.
How can a product’s function influence material choice?
A product’s function determines the material needed for durability, flexibility, weight or resistance to heat and moisture.
How can colour impact the appeal of a product?
Colour can attract attention, create mood, indicate function (red for warnings) and appeal to a target market.
How does texture influence user perception of a product?
Smooth textures can feel sleek and high-quality, while rough textures may improve grip and usability.
How does material selection affect a products cost?
Expensive materials increase production costs, while cheaper materials may reduce quality.
What factors should a designer consider when selecting materials?
Strength, weight, durability, cost, environmental impact, and suitability for manufacturing processes.
What are the benefits of designing for disassembly?
Allows products to be easily taken apart for recycling, repair, or reusing parts
