Design Process Flashcards
What is the first stage of the design process?
Problem identification
-before starting a design you must find a problem or gap in the market and attempt to solve it with a solution.
What is the 2nd stage of the design process?
Design breif
-a short description on how you’ll attempt to solve the problem.
What is the 3rd stage of the design process?
Analysis
-indenifing and determining solutions
What is the 4th stage of the design process?
Reserch
-detailed analysis of information
-eg: researching materials; existing products; costumers
What’s the 5th stage of the design process?
Specification
-detailed information about product details
-eg: cost; size; safety; and function
What is the 6th stage of the design process?
Ideas
-using the specification as a guide to produce solutions and ideas
What is the 7th stage of the design process?
Extending and modifying of the best ideas
What is the 8th stage of the design process?
Solution
-a detailed presentation of the final idea
What is the 9th stage of the design process?
Prototype
-a functioning model that will demonstrate how the product will work
What is the 10th stage of the design process?
Evaluation
-compareing the prototype to the specification and rating the overall design
-The one who commissions the design by identifying the need for a new product
-the one supplying the funding for the product
The client
-The one who solves the problem
The designer
-using the directions of the designers instructions they will make the design consept into a real product
The manufacturer
-a supplier who stocks to product for the customer
The retailer
-the customer who ends up using the product
The user
Name 3 methods of idea generation
-disassembly of existing products
-intail prototypes
-brainstorming / thought showers
-physical mockups
-user experience / trips
-consept sketches
-CAD modelling
What are the advantages of consept sketching?
-gives lots examples / ideas
-quick access
-gives examples of a possible problem to the solution
-sketches are written down so they can be developed further
What are the advantages of modelling / physical mockups?
-they are scaled representations of the product
-models are quick and inexpensive
Eg: made from cardboard; paper; foam; and manufactured boards
-they allow you to test your ideas
What are the advantages of CAD?
-they allow percise measurements
-online sharing
-allow a 3-D veiw of product design
-easy to change and test within the app
What does fitness for purpose mean?
-a product fulfilling a need or what it was intended / designed to do
What does the term ‘ergonomics’ mean?
Ergonomics:
-a term that refers to the relationship between the user and the product
What does the term ‘anthropetric data’ mean?
Anthropetric data:
-detailed measurements of the average human body
-this can be used to help designers make products to fit the users hand
Eg: a remote controller; or a xbox controller
