Design for Manufacture Flashcards
4 uses of prototypes:
- To learn about the design
- communicate the design
- Integration of subsystems
- Testing and providing confidence in design
Comprehensive vs focused prototypes
Comprehensive:
- Implement most product attributes
- Fully operational
Focused:
- Implement main features
- investigate overall performance (estimated)
Rapid prototyping vs additive manufacturing
Rapid prototyping:
-Demo pieces
- proof of concept
Additive Manufacturing:
- real, scalable manufacturing process
- low batch, high value
Equation for cost of a manufactured part
Cost of Manufactured Part = Material Cost + Energy to make the part + Cost to make the Data + Ancillary Costs
What are ancilliary costs? give examples
One-off or on going costs (often INDIRECT) Mahcinery, tooling, rent compliance costs, etc
What are Data costs? give examples
Anything that involves “know how”: Operating machinery, manual tasks (labour), creating design (labour and software)
