Design Elements 2 Flashcards
… is the area around or between elements in design. It can be used to separate group information.
Space
… refers to the size of an object (a whole) in relationship to another object (another whole).
Scale
A … is a mark between two points. There are various types, from straight to squiggly to curved and more. They can have a wide range of purposes: stressing a word or phrase, connecting pieces of content together, creating patterns, separating design elements and components and much more.
Line
… is one of the hardest elements to harness, and probably one of the most challenging to understand. The basics, however, are relatively easy. it can help the organization of a design, and give emphasis to specific areas or actions. it does not necessarily be present in design.
Colour
A … is two dimensional object that stands out from the space around it because of a defined or implied boundary. They can be consistent to add meaning to websites and different …s are familiar to many users.
Shape
… is the way a surface feels, or the way its perceived to feel. There are two types of …: tactile and visual, Visual is the only form that exists in digital design. Tactile …s are three-dimensional and can be touched. The easiest example is tree bark. When you touch bark, you can feel all the bumps and ridges, the roughness and smoothness. A photo of the same bark would be a visual texture. You can see it, not feel it.
Texture
… is the ‘value’ of a colour. We speak about it when we discuss ‘light’ and ‘dark’. Pictures can be made entirely from it, without colour. This is the nature of a black and white photograph. It can: be used to represent things, objects, people or places in descriptive or symbolic ways. Communicate emotions, feelings or ideas. Appeal to our senses. Be used for practical purposes.
Tone
…s are three dimensional, and there are two types: geometric (man-made) and natural (organic). A digital or physical … can be measured by height, width, and depth. A … can be created by combining shapes, and it can be enhanced by colour or texture. Depending on their usage, they can also be ornate or utilitarian. For digital design, think of … as the object you’re designing for a mobile device, the phone is your … .
Form
… is the relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another. it refers to the relative size of parts of a whole (elements within and object). We often think of …s in terms of size relationships within the human body.
