User - Centered Design

- Most popular approach
- Focuses on user’s needs/goals
- Disadvantages - it can make products/services too narrow in focus

Activity Centered Design
A
- Focus is on task and activities that need to be accomplished within a project, service, or application
- Activities defined as both actions/decisions
- Disadvantage - can lead to products that are too easy to lear, and may lead designers to ignore problems rather than solving them

Systems Design
A
- Focuses on the component of the system (people, devices, machines, etc.)
- Goals drawn from users

What are the key components to Systems Design?
A
- Sensors - measures feedback and detects changes
- Comparators - detects disturbances and corrects actions based on goals
- Actuators - Displays or exhibits effects of the system
- Controls - Allows for manual manipulation of the system

- Relies completely on the skill and wisdom of the designer making the product or service
- Users are source of validation for the design
- Designers are the source of inspiration
- Little or no user involvement
- Results are complete successes or absolute failures
