design Flashcards
rule of thirds?
- is a compositional theory applied to layouts of images
- divides image into 3x3 grid
reasons for grid lines?
- organises content
- balance
- easier alignment
- spacing
form of content?
refers to the visual presentation and structure of content
reading gravity?
refers to eye movement of a reader
design principle definition
design principles are the laws and rules applied to elements
balance?
- symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial
- same visual weight
- creates equality, importance, harmony
emphasis?
- highlights or gives importance to a particular element
- proportion, colour, shape
dominance?
- element that overrules everything else
- catches eye/focal point
pattern?
- repetition of elements
e.g. colours, typography, symbols, layout
unity?
– relationship between elements
- formed through repetition and proximity
movement?
- motion in an image when an object seems to be moving
- lines, shapes, direction
what is monochromatic, analogous and complementary colours?
monochromatic - different shades/tints of the same colour
analogous - a set of colours next to each other on the wheel
complementary - opposite each other on the colour wheel
what is a tint and a shade?
- a tint is a colour + white
- a shade is a colour + black
what is primary, secondary and tertiary colours?
primary - blue, yellow, red
secondary - primary + primary
tertiary - primary + secondary
what does colour do to a design?
- creates moods, emotions
- presents themes
- visually appealing
definition of design elements?
elements of design are the features involved in making a design
line?
- defines position, mood, perspective, shape
- leading lines, directs eye
e.g. horizontal, straight, vertical, diagonal
e.g. thick, thin, bold, faint
shape?
- out line of an image
- organic or geometric
- produced by colour, line, value, size
space?
- area around or within images
- negative space, empty space
- positive space, filled space
texture?
- the surface quality of an object
target audience? why and what characteristics
- important because you can understand how to reach your ideal audience
e.g. age, gender, education, race, hobbies, religion…
what is a style guide?
- a style guide keeps record of design components, making it easier for your design to stay consistent.
e.g. colour palette, typography, structure, style
what is a storyboard?
- a blueprint/rough final design, which displays all elements and characteristics
what is a thumbnail and wireframe?
- a thumbnail represents all the UI elements you’ll need for your design
- they help you work out the basic navigation structure
- a wireframe is a sketch of the thumbnails
