Descriptive Statistics pt I Flashcards
What does descriptive statistics do?
It organizes and summarizes collected data
Name two ways of summarizing data. Eg total
- Graphs
- use of numbers. i.e to calculate
The way a set of data is measured is called ?
level of measurement
What are the four main levels of measurement that data can be classified into? (from lowest to highest)
- Nominal scale
- Ordinal scale
- Interval scale
- Ratio scale
What type of data is nominal data?
a type of qualitative data used to label variables without providing any quantitative value.
What type of data is ordinal data?
Ordinal data is a kind of qualitative data that groups variables into ordered categories, which have a natural order or rank based on some hierarchal scale, like from high to low, hot to hottest
What type of data is interval data?
Data measured along a numerical scale that has equal distances between adjacent values. These distances are called ‘intervals’.
For interval data there is no true zero on an interval scale that represents total absence of variable. True or false?
True
Because there’s no true zero, you can’t multiply or divide scores on interval scales. e.g. 30°C is not twice as hot as 15°C. (true or false)
True
Define a ratio scale.
A quantitative scale with a true zero and equal intervals between neighbouring points.
Give examples of a ratio scale.
- Kelvin scale
- Metre scale/rule
