Descriptive Statistics: Measurement Flashcards
mode
the number found most often
mean
what most people just call the average
median
the number right in the middle of the list of data
central tendency
a way of summarizing some data with a single number
arithmetic mean of a set of values
the ratio of their sum to the total number of values in the set
geometric mean
the nth root when you multiply n numbers together
uses multiplication and roots
used to calculate the average rate of growth when the growth is determined by multiplication
outlier
a number that is significantly greater or smaller than the rest of the data
range
the difference between the highest and lowest values
four measures of central tendency

range
bimodal
This means that the most popular values
quartile
a group of values and/or means that divide a data set into quarters, or groups of four
interquartile range
a value that is the difference between the upper quartile value and the lower quartile value
To find the quartiles of a data set use the following steps
Order the data from least to greatest.
Find the median of the data set and divide the data set into halves.
Find the median of the two halves.
quantile
a set of values used to divide any frequency distribution into equal groups
decile
a specific type of quantile that arranges data into 10 equal parts
