Descriptive statistics and probability distributions Flashcards
What is a random variable?
A variable whose possible values are numerical outcomes of a random phenomenon.
Two types:
Discrete (e.g. number of students in a class)
Continuous (amount of time it takes to run a mile)
What is a probability distribution?
an equation that links each outcome of a statistical experiment with its probability of occourrence
What is cumulative probability?
Refers to the probability that the value of a random variable falls within a specified range
How do you show the distributions of continuous variables?
Histograms, through binning
Descriptive Statistics
Central Tendency
- mean, median, mode, geometric mean, interquartile mean
Spread
- variance, standard deviation, range, interquartile range
What types of distributions are there?
Normal Chi-square Uniform Beta Gamma Poisson Exponential Log ... ... ...
