Descriptive statistics Flashcards
What are descriptive statistics?
Figures that describe a dataset or sample
What are measures of central tendency and what do they include?
Tell us the average instead of presenting raw data
They include: mean, median and mode
What are measures of variability? What do they include?
Measure the dispersion of the data
They include: range, interquartile range and standard deviation
What kind of data are you best to use the mean for?
Ratio data (heights, weights, number of eggs)
What kind of data is best to use for median?
Ratio or ordinal data
What is the only data type that you can use the mode for?
Nominal data (colours/gender)
What kind of data can the range be used for?
Ratio data or ordinal
What is IQR used for?
Median
What is the standard deviation mostly linked with?
Mean
What are histograms great for?
See how variable the data is and detect any possible outliers
What does a normal distribution look like?
Bell-shaped curve
What are skewed distributions described as?
Bunched up to one side
Left (Positive)
When data is skewed what is normal to report?
Median and IQR
What is a bimodal distribution?
Has two peaks
