Descriptive Dermatology Flashcards
Macule
small, flat area of pigment change
Patch
large, flat area of pigment change
Papule
small, raised bump
Plaque
large, raise plateu
Nodule
deeper seated, discrete, round lump
Cyst
Usually a nodule that is filled with something (fluid, keratin, hair follicle, components)
Vesicle
small, fluid-filled blister
Bulla (tense vs. flaccid)
Large-fluid filled blister
The amount of fluid in the blister determines how tense it is. However, a more superficial blister has fewer layers of skin over it, making it more fragile and less able to enclose a large amount of fluid. A deeper blister has more layers of skin over it, making it more capable of filling up with a large amount of fluid.
Comedo
Blackhead or whiteheard
Telangiectasia
Dilated superficial blood vessel
Petechia
Small, punctate areas of hemorrhage into the skin
Purpura
Larger areas of hemorrhage into the skin
Scale
Heaped up stratum corneum
Crust
Crust occurs when plasma exudes through an eroded epidermis. It is rough on the surface and is yellow or brown in colour. Bloody crust appears red, purple or black.
Lichenification
thickening of the skin due to chronic rubbing and scratching
