When describing a skin lesion, what is a macule?
A flat non-palpable lesion (skin discolouration)
When describing a skin lesion, what is a patch?
A flat non-palpable lesion that is larger than 1 cm (if smaller than 1 cm then it is called a macule)
When describing a skin lesion, what is a papule?
A small raised lesion of less than 0.5 cm
When describing a skin lesion, what is a nodule?
A large raised lesion of more than 0.5 cm.
When describing a skin lesion, what is a plaque?
Elevated or sunken, flat lesion. Classic of psoriasis.

Small fluid-filled lesion of less than 0.5 cm.

A large fluid filled lesion of more than 0.5 cm.

A pus filled lesion.

An area of skin from which the epidermis alone is lost

An area of skin from which the epidermis and part of the dermis is lost
What does atrophy with regard to skin lesions?
Thinning of the skin due to partial loss of one or more of the tissue layers of the skin.
When describing the surface characteristics of a skin lesions, what does scaley mean?
There are white flakes of keratin
When describing the surface characteristics of skin lesions, what does warty mean?
Rough / papillomatous surface
When describing the surface characteristics of skin lesions, what does crusty mean?
That there is dried exudate
With reference to a skin lesion, what does excoriation mean?
Superficial ulceration secondary to scratching by the patient.
