describing biodiversity - ecosystem relationships Flashcards
yr 11 unit 1
community
a group of populations of different species living in close proximity (within an ecosystem), sum of all living organisms in a habitat
competition
when individuals compete for a resource that limits their survival & reproduction. if a resource is not limited, competition will not happen
collaboration
when individuals of the same species work together in a manner that benefits all
intraspecies
interactions that are relationships between members of the same species
interspecies
interactions that are relationships between members of different species
predation
when an organism (predator) kills and or eats another organism (the prey) for food
disease
the interaction between a disease causing organism and host
symbiosis
relationship in which individuals of two or more species live together, benefitting at least one of the species
parasitism
when one organism (the parasite) benefits from living together while the other (the host) is harmed by this interaction
mutualism
an interactive relationship where both organisms benefit from living together
commensalism
a one sided interaction between species where only one organism (the commensal) benefits while the other is neither harmed nor sees benefits
