Describe The Endocrine System Flashcards
Is the endocrine system similar to any other?
The endocrine system is like the nervous system. However, it works much slower.
In basic terms how does the endocrine system work?
The endocrine system uses chemical signals that bind to receptor molecules.
What is the basic overall function of the endocrine system?
It works with the nervous system to regulate functions of the human body to maintain homeostasis.
In basic terms what do the glandular cells do within the endocrine system?
The glandular cells of endocrine system release hormones into the bloodstream carrying messenger molecules throughout the body.
Where does interstitial fluid come from and where does it go?
The endocrine system and its glands secrete hormones that diffuse from the interstitial fluid in to the bloodstream.
What is a standout feature of the endocrine glands?
Endocrine glands are ductless glands.
What are the purposes of the endocrine glands?
There purpose is to regulate metabolism, controlling chemical reactions, transporting substances, regulating water and electrolytes balance. It also aids with reproduction, growth and development.
What do endocrine glands do?
They release hormones into surrounding tissue and fluid.
What do these endocrine glands normally have large amounts of?
These glands usually have a large amount of both vascular and lymphatic drainage of their hormones.
List the major endocrine glands?
The glands are:
- Pituitary gland.
- Thyroid gland.
- Parathyroid glands.
- Adrenal glands.
- Pancreas.
- Pineal glands.
- Thymus glands.
- Reproductive glands.
Where is the pituitary gland located?
The pituitary gland is at the base of the brain in the sellaturcica, attached by a stalk to the hypothalamus.
What is the endocrine functions of the hypothalamus?
These functions include production and release of hormones so it considered to be a neuroendocrine organ.
Several organs also secrete hormones which are they?
Organs that secrete hormones include the stomach, small intestine, kidneys and heart.
