Describe how prokaryotes use operons to regulate genes

A

In prokaryotes, operons are a way of regulating gene expression. The operon are a cluster of genes with specific parts such as the promoter and operator. The promoter is where RNA polymerase binds to begin transcription. The operator acts as a switch, controlled by a repressor protein. A signal molecule can influence the repressor, with inducers activating the operon and corepressors inhibiting it. When an inducer binds to the repressor, it deactivates it, allowing RNA polymerase to transcribe the genes. Conversely, when a corepressor is present, it activates the repressor, blocking transcription.
