Dermis and Subcutaneous layer Flashcards
Name the layers above and below the dermis
Epidermis and subcutaneous layer
What are the functions of the dermis?
support, strength and elasticity.
List the appendages of the dermis
hair, hair follicle, arrector pili muscle, sudoriferous glands, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerve endings.
Name the two types of sudoriferous (sweat) glands
Eccrine and apocrine
What is the difference between eccrine and apocrine glands?
Eccrine are mostly everywhere on the body mainly on the palms of hands and soles of the feet. Apocrine are in the genital and underarm regions and produce body odour.
What is the name of the oily substance which is produced by the sebaceous glands and contains fats, cholestrol and cellular debris?

hair follicle.
The dermis has two layers one superficial and one deep, name them.
superficial layer is the papillary layer.
deep layer is the reticular layer.
Which protein fibres give the skin its strength and resillience?
collagen fibres.
What is the function of the protein fibre elastin?
gives the skin its elasticity.
Which fibres help to support and hold structures of the skin in place?
Reticular fibres
Which cells react when the skin is damaged or an allergic reaction occurs?
mast cells - they create histamine causing vasodilation.
