Dermis and Appendages Flashcards
Dermis
Connective tissue, made of fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells, and white blood cells. Made of collagen and elastic fibers
Papillary layer
upper dermal layer, contains capillary loops, pain receptors, and touch receptors
Dermal Ridges
Fingerprints located under papillae, increase friction, enhance grip
Reticular layer
deepest skin layer, collagen binds with water to hydrate skin, has blood vessels, oil and sweat glands.
Cleavage lines
Regions of less dense fibers
Flexure lines
dermal folds where tightly secured to deeper structures
Hypodermis
filled with fat, acts as insulator and shock absorber
Melanin
Yellow, Brown, or Black pigments
Carotene
Orange- Yellow pigment found in palms and soles
Hemoglobin
Red coloring form blood cells in dermal capillaries
Cyanosis
When there is a lack of oxygenated blood and skin turns blue
Oil Glands
produce oil, lubricant for skin, prevent brittle hair, and kills bacteria. Activated at puberty
