DERMIS Flashcards
Dermis
Second layer of skin , holding vessels , nerve endings a, sweat glands , and hair follicles
Papillary Layer
Outer layer of the dermis , directly beneath the epidermis
Dermal Papilla
a fingerlike projection of the papillary region of the dermis that may contain blood capillaries
Reticular layer
Deeper layer of the dermis that supplies the skin with oxygen and nutrients .
Dense Connective tissue
Connective tissue with large amounts of either collagen fibers .
hair shaft
the portion of the hair that projects beyond the skin
follicle
a structure in the dermis of the skin from which a strand of hair grows
Arrector Pili Muscle
tiny smooth involuntary muscle attached to hair follicle and dermal papillae .
Sebaceous Gland
a cutaneous gland that secretes sebum for lubricating hair and skin
Epithelial cell
cell covering the surface of the skin and inner lying of body cavities and tubes
sebum
the oil secretion of the sebaceous glands
sweat gland
any of the glands in skin that secrete perspiration
duct epithelium
form cylinder that link secretory epithelium to surface
gland epithelium
surface lining cell , regenerative cell
eccrine sweat glands
On the forehead, upper lip , palms and soles, not hair follicles , regulates temperature .
artery
a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body
vein
a blood vessel that carries blood from the capillaries toward the heart
lymphatic vessel
a vascular duct that carries lymph which is eventually added to the venous blood circulation
nerve
any bundle of nerve fibers running to various organs and tissues of the body
receptor
an organ having nerve endings (in the skin eye ,ear or nose or mouth ) that respond to stimulation
subcutaneous tissue
connective and adipose tissue layer just under the dermis
ceruminous glands
modified sweat glands located in external ear canal , secretes cerumen
hair follicles
tube like pockets of epidermal cells that make hair cells and external keratin
