How to examine lumps?

A

Site - neck, face, scalp, nose
Size - 2 dimensions unless it’s round
Shape - as above
Mobile or fixed - can it be moved freely, fixed to skin, bone, muscle
Consistency - hard, firm, soft, rubbery, fluctuant
Surface - irregular, smooth, craggy
Covering skin/mucosa - normal, ulcerated, colour, erythema, blanches

What does it mean if the lump is fixed?

A

It’s growing into the tissue = invasive = probably cancer

SCC:

Melanoma:

  • Younger pts
  • Sun exposure
  • Trunk and limbs
  • Variable growth
  • Metastasise often
