What is a gel?
Thickened aqueous solutions with HMWP
What is a lotion?
suspension of medication in water/alcohol/liquid
What is a cream?
semi-solid emulsion of oil and water containing emulsifier and preservative
What is an ointment?
semi-solid mix of grease and oil containing soft paraffin
What is the treatment of eczema?
- Avoidance and soap substitutes
- Emollient
- Topical steroids for flare ups
- Calcineurin inhibitors
- Systemic immunosuppressants
Antihistamines at night sometimes
What is the treatment of psoriasis?
Topical:
- Emollients
- Topical steroid and vitamin D
- Coal tar if widespread
- Immunosuppressants

How does dermatitis herpetiformis present?
Itchy blistering rash, associated with coeliac
What is dermatitis herpeticum?
When eczema gets infected with HSV, can be lethal
Pemphigus vs pemphigoid
Pemphigus: nikolsky sign positive, IgG against desmogleins
Pemphigoid: IgG against hemidesmosomes, sub-epidermal
What are warts caused by?
HPV
Describe immunofluorescence of pemphigus and pemphigoid
pemphigoid: linear IgG
pemphigus: scattered IgG
What strains of HPV cause what?
1-4: warts
6 and 11: genital warts
16 and 18: cancer
Histology of warts?
Focal epidermal hyperplasia with hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis and papillomatosis
Histology of psoriasis?
Parakeratosis (cell nuclei within stratum corneum) and thickened projections of the prickle cell layer of keratinocytes (psoriasiform hyperplasia). There is no granular layer
