what is scabies
parasitic infection caused by mite and causes intesne irrtiation and itchiness
how are scabies transmitted
-sexually
-casual contact e.g. handshakes
-sharing clothes, towels etc.
risk factors of scabies
-contact with infected person
-crowded living conditions e.g. in nursing homes, prisons etc.
-winter months
scabies symptoms
-lesions with small papules
-between fingers, wrists, waist etc. but not head or neck but potentially for young or old people
-immunocompromised people may get crusted scabies, severe type that causes a crusted flaky rash that affects elbows, knees, hands, feet
when to refer for scabies
crusted scabies, causes thick, crusted lesions
treatment for scabies
-lyclear dermal cream x 30g. apply cream to clean dry skin and apply to whole body. repeated 7-14 days after first time
-derbac M (malathion) lotion. leave on for only 24 hours. use a second time after a week
practical measures for scabies
-wash bedding and clothes on high temp
-treat household member or sexual partners. refer if its younger than 2 years old
-don’t have sex
-dont share bedding
how long does scabies last
-without treating, 4-6 weeks or longer
-with treatment, mites are killed within 24-48 hours but itching may persistent for 6 weeks
-child can go back to school 24 hours after 1st treatment
