dermatologic descriptions Flashcards
superficial, well circumscribed, raised, serous fluid filled lesion >.5 cm diameter
Bulla
ex. bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus
subcutaneous linear, serpingious tunnel within epidermis
made by a parasite
Burrow
ex. scabies
slightly raised lesion w/ irregular border, variable color from dried exudate
Crust
ex. scab from an abrasion
flat, nonblanching, red-purple-blue lesion, result of extravasation of RBC into skin
(large purpura lesion)
Ecchymosis
ex. trauma, long term steroid use
depressed lesion resulting from loss of epidermis due to rupture of vesicles or bullae; wears away due to friction or pressure; heals without scarring
Erosion
ex. rupture of herpes simplex blister
linear, superficial lesion, may be covered w/ dried blood
early lesions w/ surrounding erythema
skin abrasions due to scratching of skin
Excoriation
ex. scratching, often self induced
deep linear lesion into the dermis, wedge shaped tear in epidermis with abrupt walls
Fissure
ex. cracks seen in athletes foot
irregular, raised lesion resulting from hypertrophied scar tissue
Keloid
ex. often seen with burns, african americans more prone
thickening of the epidermis w/ increase in skin markings from chronic irritation and rubbing
Lichenification
ex. atopic dermatitis
circumscribed flat area
Macule
ex. freckles, rubella, petechiae
solid, palpable, circumscribed lesion, larger than papule (>1cm )and smaller than a tumor (
Nodule
ex. erythema nodosum
circumscribed, solid, elevated lesion
Papule
ex. acne, warts, insect bites
nonpalpable, flat, circumscribed discoloration of the skin w/ irregular border, >1cm
Patch
ex. vitiligo
flat, pinhead sized, nonblanching, red-purple lesion caused by hemorrhage into the skin
Petechiae
ex. seen in DIC, ITP, SLE, meningococcemia
well circumscribed, solid, elevated, superficial lesion >1cm
may be formed from confluent papules
Plaque
ex. psoriasis, discoid lupus erythematosus, actinic keratosis
