Epidemiology
Eczema 3.5% of the population
Atiology
Genetic/enviromental
Can be atopic, allergic, irritant contact or sebborheic
Dermatitis or eczema?
eczema = atopic dermatitis
Eczema also used for chronic dermatitis
dry skin, contact with a particular substance, certain drugs, varicose veins, constant scratching, and fungal infections
Pathogenesis of dermatitis
inflammation of the upper layers of the skin, causing itching, blisters, redness, swelling, and often oozing, scabbing, and scaling.
Characteristic = e.g. Psoriatic, lichenoid
Infective =Bacteria, viruses, fungi etc.
Non-specific = Eczematous dermatitis
Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis= type 1 hypersenstivity reaction, IgE.
Contact Dermatitis - 2 types/ irritant or allergic
asteatotic eczema - older dry skin becomes
seborrhoeic dermatitis - yeast in sebum/nt infectious
statis dermatitis - varicose veins/ oedema
photocontact -
photophobic
neurodermatitis - from behaviour-tick
natural history
can be self limiting/constant/recurrent
Clinical Manifestations
potentially infectious depending on reason

vary with different forms of the condition.

Although every type of dermatitis has different symptoms, there are certain signs that are common for all of them, including redness of the skin, swelling, itching and skin lesions with sometimes oozing and scarring
Signs

bumpy rashes
including blisters.

Complications
infection, disfiguring
Prognosis
treatable but not curable.
Atopic - antihistamine
