Hyperkeratosis
Thickening of stratum corneum
Parakeratosis:
retention of nuclei in stratum corneum (normal in mucous membranes)
Hypergranulosis:
Hyperplasia of stratum granulosum
Acanthosis:
diffuse epidermal hyperplasia
Papillomatosis:
hyperplasia and enlargement of contiguous dermal papillae leading to surface elevation
Dyskeratosis:
abnormal keratinization occurring prematurely in cell below stratum granulosum
Acantholysis:
loss of intercellular connections causing loss of cohesion between keratinocytes
Spongiosis:
Epidermal intercellular edema
Macule:
flat, <2cm freckle
Patch:
flat, >2cm rash/ measles.
Papule:
raised, <1 cm eczema
Nodule:
raised, >1cm nevi/mole
Tumor:
raised, >5cm melanoma
Vessicle:
fluid filled, <1cm HSV lesion
Bulla:
fluid filled, >1cm burn
