prone leg check procedure
- thumbs on soles just below heels, index fingers posterior and middle finger anteiror to lateral malleolus
- pull thumbs and elbows laterally to remove any inversion/eversion
- dorsiflex ankles until slight resistance is met, flare toes laterally 15 degrees
- apply headward pressure with thumbs
- note which side is short
knee flex leg check procedure
- middle finger along metatarso-phalangeal junction. index finger straight ahead, thumb up and out of the way
- dorsiflex foot to tension before bringing legs up
- at 40 degrees, put thumbs on soles of feet, allow infex fingers to drift to welt of shoe, continue to 90 degrees
- remove inversion/eversion
- note which leg is shorter
when is the leg check negative?
reactive leg is 1/2 inch short prone
in knee flexed position, leg either stays 1/2 inch short or shortens more than 1/2 inch
when is the leg check positive?
reactive leg is 1/2 inch short prone
in knee flexed position, leg lengthens, becomes even or crosses over and becomes long
what happens if the legs are even prone and one goes long in knee flexed position?
positive leg check on side of leg in knee flexed position
