Depressions Flashcards
What are airmasses?
Uniform bodies of air
Are are airmasses named?
Based on where they have come from, they have a certain temperature and humidity. The terms “Arctic”, “Polar” and “Tropical” all describe temperature, while “maritime” and “continental” describe humidity. All terms describe where the airmass has come from.
How are depressions formed?
-Polar maritime and tropical maritime airmasses converge -The Tropical maritime airmass is forced to rise -This upward movement means there is less air at the surface, or low pressure. -The Upper westerlies move the depression in a N/NE direction
