Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA)

Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor (NDRI)
Buproprion
Mixed serotonergic effects
Nefazodone, Trazodone, Vilazodone
Serotonin and alpha 2 adrenergic antagonist
Mirtazapine
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
Phenelzine, Selegline, Tranylcypromine
This class is often chosen first due to it’s safety in overdose and improved tolerabilty.
SSRI
Some studies suggest this class may be associated with higher rates of response and remission.
SNRI
Common side effects of SSRIs
GI, sexual disfunction, headache and insomnia
Common side effects of SNRIs
Insomnia, nausea, serotonin syndrome, sexual dysfunction
Common side effects of TCAs
Anticholinergic (dry mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision, constipaiton, dizziness, memory impairment), delerium at higher doses, orthostatic hypotension, cardiac conduction delays, wt gain, sexual dysfunction
Common side effects of MOAI’s
Postural hypotension, rare but serious: hypertensive crisis (give captopril).
