What is the diagnostic criteria for depression (the 9 signs)

A

Must show 5 of the 9 symptoms for SIG E CAPS
(Sleep, interest, guilt, energy, concentration, appetite, psychomotor, suicide). One of the 5 must be depressed mood or anhedonia. Symptoms must last at least two weeks nearly every day and impair social/occupational functioning

A

A chronic, minor depression, also called dysthymia

D = Consider other diagnoses
E = educate the patient about side effects, when the expect a respone
T = Treat with meds/psychotherapy etc
RE = re-evaluate in 1-2 weeks and check again at 2-4 weeks
