What are the DSM-5 categories of depression?
Major depressive disorder: severe but often short term depression
Persistent depressive disorder: long term or recurring depression including sustained major depression
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder: childhood temper tantrums
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder: disruption of mood prior and/or during menstruation
What are the behaviour characters of depression?
Activity levels: Due to reduced energy they become lethargic, leading to withdrawal from work, school and social life or it can lead to opposite effect “psychomotor agitation” which is a struggle to relax
Disruption to sleep and eating behaviour: insomnia or hypersonic and appetite varying
-Aggression and self harm: sufferers are often irritable and can lead to physical aggression on self
What are emotional characteristics of depression?
Lowered mood: feelings of worthlessness
Anger: this can be directed at the self or others. such emotions can lead to aggressive or self-harming behaviour
Lowered self esteem: sense of self-loathing
What are the cognitive characteristics of depression?
Poor concentration: unable to stick to a task, hard to make usually straightforward decisions
Attending to and dwelling on the negative: have a bias towards recalling unhappy events rather than happy ones
Absolutist thinking: things are be all or end all
