What are the DSM-5 categories of depression?

A
  • Major depressive disorder: severe but often short term depression
  • Persistent depressive disorder: long term or recurring depression including sustained major depression
  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder: childhood temper tantrums
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder: disruption of mood prior and/or during menstruation

What are the behaviour characters of depression?

A
  • Activity levels: Due to reduced energy they become lethargic, leading to withdrawal from work, school and social life or it can lead to opposite effect “psychomotor agitation”- struggle to relax
  • Disruption to sleep and eating behaviour: insomnia or hypersonic and appetite varying

-Aggression and self harm: often irritable and can lead to physical aggression on self

  • Lowered mood: feelings of worthlessness
  • Anger
  • Lowered self esteem: Self hating
