What is depression?
mood disorder characterised by extreme sadness
What symptoms does the DSM state a person must experience to be diagnosed with major depression?
-Depressed Mood/Loss of interest or pleasure in most everyday activities nearly everyday for at least 2 weeks
What are the emotional characteristics of depression?
-Depressed Mood
-Loss of Interest and Pleasure
-Worthlessness
What is a depressed mood?
The ever present and overwhelming feelings about d sadness/hopelessness (intense)
What is a loss of interest and pleasure?
Lack of enthusiasm associated with a lack on d concern or pleasure in daily activities
What is worthlessness?
Having constant feelings of low self worth and or inappropriate feelings of guilt
What are the cognitive characteristics of depression?
-Reduces Concentration
-Negative Beliefs about self
-Suicidal thoughts
What is reduced concentration?
-difficulty in paying/maintaining concentration and-or slowed down thinking and difficulty making decisions (interferes with individuals work)
What is negative beliefs about self?
Persistent negative beliefs about themselves and their abilities
What are suicidal thoughts?
constant thoughts of death and or suicide
What are behavioural characteristics of depression?
-Change in activity
-Change in eating
-Change in sleeping patterns
-Social impairment
What is a change in activity?
-Reduced amounts of energy resulting in fatigue, lethargy and high levels of inactivity/psychomotor agitation (struggle to relax and pace up and down)
What is a change in eating patterns?
-change in appetites which may mean they eat more or less and gain or lose weight (5%)
What is a Change in sleeping patterns?
Insomnia/ excessive sleeping (l
What is social impairment?
reduced levels of social interaction with friends and relations
