What is major depressive disorder?
severe but often short-term
What is persistent depressive disorder?
long-term or recurring depression
What is disruptive mood dysregulation disorder?
childhood temper tantrums
What is premenstrual depressive disorder?
disruption to mood prior to and/or during menstruation
What are the behavioural characteristics of depression?
Activity levels- reduced energy levels, lethargy, tend to withdraw from education, work and social life / high energy levels, psychomotor agitation, struggling to relax
Disruptive sleep and eating- reduced sleep (insomnia) or increased need for sleep (hypersomnia), increased or decreased appetite which may lead to weight loss or gain
Aggression and Self-Harm- verbally or physically aggressive, self-infliction, suicide attempts
What are the emotional characteristics of depression?
Lowered Mood- sense of worthlessness and emptiness
Anger- directed at self or others can produce behavioural self harming or physical aggression
Lowered Self Esteem- liking themselves less than usual, sense of self-loathing
What are the cognitive characteristics of depression?
Poor Concentration- unable to focus on task or make normally straightforward decisions
Attending to and Dwelling on Negative- inclined to pay more attention to negatives in a situation and ignore positives
Absolutist Thinking- most situations not all good or all bad, see unfortunate situation as absolute disaster
