Depositional environment: Carbonate environments Flashcards

Q

What is the Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD)? (Deepwater)

A

The depth in the oceans at which the rate of solution of solid CaCO3 equals the rate of supply.
Above this depth, calcareous plankton may accumulate as an ooze.
Below this depth, the CaCO3 is dissolved and remains in solution (as shown by the equation)
CaCo3 + CO2 ⇌ Ca2[+] (aqueous) + 2HCO3 [-] (aqueous)
