Deposition Flashcards
Overview
Takes place in low energy environments and is the laying down of solid material such as sand and silt
Importance
Important in the sediment cell
Areas of deposition, beaches, spits, mudflats are all sediment stores/sinks
Aeolian deposition
refers to transport and deposition of sediment by wind
Wind plays an important part in shaping the coastline
Sand
Most significant in terms of depositional features at the coast
Eg when swash is more dominant than the backwash the sand dries out and can be blown by the wind to form sand dunes
Factors when deposition occurs
Deposition takes place when velocity of water falls below critical value and particle can no longer be transported, energy flows may decrease due to:
Energy source altering- current weakens and prevailing wind becomes weaker in strength
Discontinuity in flow- turbulence between opposing currents can result in deposition
Increased friction- more energy required to overcome friction with seabed less can be transported, +++ deposition
Increased load- sudden discharge of material from a river or landslip some material deposited
