Impacts of depopulation
A
Advantages:
1. Reduction of pollution from old primary industries
Disadvantages:
- Services close down
- Increase cost per head of public utilities
- Empty villages and abandoned buildings
- Drastically altered population structure, often leaving an ageing population isolated

List four causes of depopulation
A
- Harsh physical environment (high relief, cold climate)
- Limited job opportunities (fishing, farming)
- ‘Bright city lights’ draw young people away
- 18-year-olds go to mainland for further education however few return due to limited job opportunities

Benefits of rural deindustrialisation
A
- There is less environmental pollution
- Different industries start to invest
- Old buildings and land can be made into tourist attractions
- Ugly buildings I have removed so there is less visual pollution
- Land can be returned to farmland. This is called re-agriculturisation
- Brownfield sites can be used for housing and industrial growth
- Old industrial land may be used for wildlife, re creation or landfill
