What does the hematology department do?
Handle various blood specimens
What tests are preformed in the hematology department?
WBC/CBC counts, RBC counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit (Hct), RBC indices, and platelet counts
What can hematology test indicate?
Dehydration, anemia, leukemia, etc
Whats tests are preformed in the chemistry department?
Blood glucose levels, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), total protein
What can chemistry tests indicate?
Confirmation of pregnancy to the presence of liver disorders
What is the purpose of blood bank?
To collect, store, and prepare blood for transfusion
What tests are preformed in microbiology department?
Blood culture and sensitivity tests (C&S)
What does microbiology department focus on?
Observation of organisms that are not visible to the human eye
What are the primary sections of microbiology department?
Parasitology; the study of parasites
Virology; the study of viruses and resulting diseases
Mycology; the study of fungi
Bacteriology; the study of bacteria
External hemorrhage first aid
apply pressure to wound til bleeding stops or EMS comes. If bleeding continues apply more gauze/cloth on top of the ones that are already there.
Symptoms of shock
Clammy pale cold skin, rapid weak pulse, shallow or increased breathing rate, and staring eyes and expressionless face
First aid for shock
Maintain open airway, call for assistance, keep patient lying down with the head lower than the rest of the body
