What is the ‘Summum bonum?’

A

The Ultimate good, can be achieved through following our duties. While the world may not feel ‘just’ as bad things happen to good people, Kant argued that there must be a being beyond Earth with fair judgement, in order to balance this out.

A

Absolutist - right in all circumstances and all people.
A priori - without experience.
Universal - applicable to all.
Summum Bonum - ‘virtue crowned in happiness.’

What imperative did Kant argue for, and what imperative did he argue against?

A

Argued for: The categorical imperative: acting according to our duty and in turn this will allow us to act rightly.
Argued against: The hypothetical imperative: Moral commands are not means to an end, they are the end.
