Q

What is acid rain made from

A

As rain frms it takes in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The rain water then mixes with the carbon dioxide forming a weak carbonic acid

Q

Why is limestone effected by acid rain

A

because limestone contains 80% calcium carbonate. The weak cobanic acid reacts with the calcium carbonate and the limestone dissloves because it is permeable and soluble.

Q

What is a swallow hole

A

Rivers also dissolve limestone.A river may begin ina non-limestone area, can dissapear underground when it reaches limestone on the surface. This occurs because the water widens the joints and bedding planes of the limestone rock through carbonation.the river will then disappear underground through a swallow holes.Swallow holes vary in size depending on how large of small the river in it is .

Q

What is a cave and carverns

A

As riversflow underground through swallow holes, carvpbonation enlarges the passages through which they flow to make caves. Some of these cavescan further widen to create chambers and carverns.

Q

How are stalactites formed

A

As the water seeps through the rocks, it carries dissolved limestone with it.Some of this water eventually reaches the roof of the cave or cavern below ground. The drops slowly evaporate and leave behingpd small diposits of pur limestone called calcite.Gradually the calcit up to form hollow icicle shapes called stalactites that hang from the roof.

17
Q

How are stalagmittes formed

A

The drops of water of the stalactites may also fall on the ground and evaporate, leaving deposits of calcite on the flloor of the cave directly under the stalactites. The calcite builds up forming stalagmittes

18
Q

How are pillars made

A

When a stalagmitte and a stalactites meet
