Dentures and Relines Flashcards
What is the powder, liquid and initiator in acrylic denture base material
- PMMA
- MMA
- Benzoyl peroxide
What two types of denture reline material are there
- Acrylic
- Silicone
6 benefits of reline
- Improve retention, support, stability
- Increases denture life
- Improves chewing ability, patient comfort and facial appearance
- Improves speech
- Alleviates trauma associated with denture wearing
- Relive mucosa for localised stress points
4 contraindications for denture reline
- Unsuitable occlusal relationship or OVD
- Denture hyperplasia
- Denture teeth notably worn or poor denture quality
- Patient unhappy with appearance of denture
What are hard reline materials made from?
Cold or heat cured acrylic.
Operator sensitive - can increase OVD or misalign on insertion
What material is used fro temporary soft reline (direct)
Cold or heat cured acrylic
What material is used for permanent soft reline (indirect)
Silicone (heat or cold cured)
What are the indications and limitations of soft reline
Indicated when cushioning and force distribution is needed, and healing of traumatise tissues.
Limited as makes denture bases thinner, difficult to clean, develop surface porosities, taste alteration, odors, colour instability, harden over time, poor retention to dentures
3 indications for a temporary reline material
- Protection of tissue required but longer protection than tissue conditioner
- Temporarily improve fit of ill-fitting denture
- Diagnostic tool for assessing need for a permanent soft liner to be placed
Indications for permanent soft reline materials
- Long term protection of underlying mucosa
- Sharp or atrophyied ridge
- Pain on denture loading on nerve endings on alveolar ridge
- Mucosa unable to tolerate denture loading
- Recurrent sore spots under dentures
2 examples of soft reline materials
- Vertex soft (short term)
- Molloplast B (long term)
What are Tissue Conditioners used for
- Denture lined temporary cushion
- Heal soft tissue trauma
- Functional impression
