Describe an ideal routine of denture care/ hygiene
(5 steps)
1 - rinse denture after every meal
2 - remove debris at night using a soft brush and soap and cold water
3 - chemically clean at night for 10-15 mins then rinse and leave in a cold water bath over night
4 - leave dentures out at night
5 - visit dentist regularly
what is an immediate denture
any removable denture prosthesis fabricated for placement immediately after removal of a tooth/teeth
advantages of an immediate denture
improved aesthetics, speech and function
prevents overeruption and drifting
promotes post extraction healing
disadvantages of an immediate denture
increased cost and patient visits
cant do a pre try in to check patient is happy
ongoing maintenance required
lots of guesswork around how healing will proceed
name 3 contraindications for proving a immediate denture
dementia
MRONJ/ORN risk areas
no aesthetic or functional need
pathology present e.g cyst
fractures
provide instructions for a patient you have just given an immediate denture to
keep denture in for the first 24 hours post extraction
After 24hours, rinse mouth with warm saline or salty water and carry out normal oral hygiene
usually be replaced 6months to 1 year post extraction
