Denture Design Anatomy Flashcards
What is the pear-shaped pad?
Mandible
Anterior to retromolar pad
Triangle area of firm keratinised mucosa that forms from the scarring after removal of the most distal molar
Can assist in support and resists denture displacement
What is the lingual pouch?
a.k.a. retromylohyoid area
Mandible
Below the mylohyoid ridge posteriorly
May be used for stability
What is the sulcus?
Mucosal trough between ridge and lip, cheeks and tongue
Important to denture flange design
What is the mylohyoid ridge?
Mandible
Bony ridge with mylohyoid muscle attached
Possible area of soreness when ridge resorbs
What is the buccal shelf?
Mandible
Horizontal cortical bone lying between ridge and external oblique ridge
Support of mucosa borne dentures
What is the incisive papilla?
Maxilla
Covers the incisive canal
Containing nerves and blood supply to the anterior palatal mucosa
Possible relief
What are rugae?
Maxilla Irregular mucosal ridges Sensitive Avoid coverage Important in speech
What is the maxillary tuberosity?
Bony ridge
Possible support area
What is the hamular notch?
Mucosal depression posterior to tuberosity
Posterior limit for maxillary dentures
What are the palatine fovea?
Maxilla
Salivary gland ducts
Two small depressions located on compressible mucosa close to vibrating line
What is the vibrating line?
Junction of the hard and soft palate (maxilla)
Placement of posterior border anterior to line on compressible mucosa
What is the palatine torus?
Bony prominence on the maxilla
Incompressible mucoperiosteum
May require relief
What are the features found in the maxillary sulcus?
Labial sulcus Labial frenum Buccal sulcus Buccal frenum Zygomatic buttress
What is the artwork of the study cast?
The sides
Not anatomical
What is the retro molar pad?
Non keratinised mucosa
Area behind the last molar on the mandible
Posterior border of the denture will finish in this area
