Types of teeth:
Incisors, canines, premolars, molars
The teeth used for cutting and closest to the front of the mouth:
Incisors
The teeth found in between the incisors and premolars, more common in adult males than females
Canines
The 3 or 4 cheek teeth closest to the front of the mouth, 1st is the wolf tooth in some horses (mostly stallions)
Premolars
The 3 teeth in the back of the mouth used for grinding
Molars
The name for non-permanent teeth in horses
Deciduous teeth
How many baby or milk teeth are there in young horses
23- 12 incisors, 12 premolars
When do the deciduous teeth come in?
Central incisors- 6 days, intermediate incisors (6 weeks), corner incisors (6 months), premolars (2 weeks)
How many teeth can an adult stallion have at most?
42
About how many teeth will a typical adult mare have?
32
When does the first deciduous central incisor erupt?
0-1 week
When does the first permanent central incisor erupt?
2.5 years
When does the second deciduous intermediate incisor erupt?
4-6 weeks
When does the second permanent intermediate incisor erupt?
3.5 years
When does the third deciduous corner incisor erupt?
6-9 months
