Dentistry Flashcards
What are the dentistry differences between rabbits and rodents?
Rabbits have 2 pairs of maxillary incisors (peg teeth) and all rabbits are herbivores
Define aradicular
Teeth don’t have roots
Define elodont
Teeth grow continuously
Define anelodont
Teeth have roots
Define hyposodont
Have crowns, clinical and reserve
Define brachyodont
Roots longer than crowns
Define anisognathic
Mandible and maxilla are different widths
What type of teeth do rabbits have?
Elodont, hypsodont, anisognathic (maxilla > mandible)
How fast do rabbit teeth grow?
2mm/week
What is stage 1 of dental disease in rabbits?
Early- apical elongation, enamel hypoplasia, tooth elongation, becomes painful +/- dysphagic or epiphora (duct occlusion)
What is stage 2 of dental disease in rabbits?
Acquired malocclusion- dental points/spurs, can lead to tongue ulceration, anorexia, decreased defecation, GI stasis/ileus
What is stage 3 of dental disease in rabbits?
Chronic/end-stage disease- fractured crowns, missing teeth, apical tooth abscesses, tear duct inflammation- has high recurrence/poor prognosis
What treatment might you perform for dental disease in a rabbit?
Occlusal adjustment, extractions, meloxicam +/- buprenorphine, supplemental feeding, fluids, antibiotics if infection. Discuss chronic nature of disease with clients.
Describe apical abscesses in rabbits
FNA for diagnosis. Treat via excision, incision and packing (w/ antibiotics), or marsupialization (best option, suture open an hole and flush). DO NOT lance and drain (caseous material)
What type of teeth do chinchillas have?
Elodont, hypsodont, aradicular, flat plane with no points
